One day I was editing a video on Final Cut Pro. I had allocated a significant amount of the SSD to Bootcamp so I could run Windows. Several months after purchasing my MacBook Pro Early 2015 with 128gb, I found myself needing more storage. Hibernate also seems to work well so far (switched to 25 mode).=Full Story= Now, it's back to x4/8GT/s and impressive 2800-2900 KB/s R&W in blackmagic. At the same time I sealed the front pins with a piece of kapton tape like here, but I'm not sure it was required.įinally, before the last reload I left the battery unplugged overnight (just because I gave up on the day one), but this might also have helped since only then the date/time other settings were actually reset.Īll of these I tried together in order to get it's finally working well, so not sure what helped exactly. This post helped me: - thanks to Oliver Holmgren, specifically: changing "slightly different seating depths of the pins on the Sintech adaptor card", it seems it's all because of so fine connection and minor sitting differences make it more to less able to negotiate a higher rate. Tried to reset PRAM and SMC and after the reboot it changed to x2 and 8GT/S and around 1600MB/s for R&W, but then, again, it dropped to x4/2.5 GT/s after reboot. Upon plugging in it Showed: Link Width: x4 Link Speed: 2.5 GT/s and speed around 700-800MB/s :(

The Evo Plus came already with the new firmware. I've just replaced the original 256Gb apple SSD on my 15' Mid2015 mbp with the exactly the same adaptor from Sintech Ebay and Samsung 2TB Evo Plus. Kudos to the randomchars for posting the findings! Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)

Remove the old SSD and install the new SSD with to the HW Replace Heading and follow instructions under that heading (NB: DISCONNECT BATTERY). I used etcher to create the USB, you can use the dd unix tool if you're a masochist.

The Samsung page is at, crack open the firmware section and locate the 970 Evo Plus firmware. You can't use this: it won't support NVMe drives, the Samsung Disk is one of these.ĮDIT Aug 16 2019: I didn't explore alternative Recovery modes, I understand it's possible to use those to restore more recent versions of macOS, but I can't say whether the Disk Utility for those might recognise your newly installed SSD.Ĭreate a bootable firmware updater for Samsung 970 Evo PlusĮDIT Aug 16 2019: Above is a direct link. Internet Recovery mode on my model is High Sierra. I also did my pre installation work (cutting the media) using Mojave on the same MBP. Don't come after me with pitchforks if it doesn't work.ĮDIT Aug 15 2019: I should note that I was running MacOS Mojave on the original Apple SSD. I am posting from an upgraded MBP.Īs usual, take backups of everything you want to keep. There hasn't been a lot of material out there on this particular drive and common results say it's not compatible with the MB.

There is a firmware upgrade ISO that you can download. Many guides out there say that you need the Samsung Magician software, Windows only, to upgrade the firmware. I was able to upgrade without needing a Win10 machine or installation.

A recent firmware update to the Evo Plus made it compatible with the MBP. Just wanted to share what I did to upgrade my MBP Mid 2015 MBP from the built in 512 Gb SSD to a 1TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus.
